friday afternoon we had our fourth "critical studies" lecture, this time by alva noë, a philosopher from uc berkeley. his theory is that vision and perception are much more related to the body and its movements than was previously thought. he had some cool visuals demonstrating his points. for example, there's a video of a group of people passing a basketball to one another. he asks you to focus on two people and count how many times they exchange the ball. then, viewing the video a second time you notice that a person in a gorilla costume quite obviously enters the frame, in the middle of all the people, and beats his chest, then walks off. you don't see him because your attention is on something else.

he also had a group discussion yesterday and some other science experiments or phenomena came up in the conversation. ghost limbs, for example. i found out about the "mcgurk effect" (google it, it's cool). also related to phantom limbs, there's an experiment where the subject's hand is under a table, being touched, while simultaneously a rubber hand on the table is being touched in an identical way. within minutes, the subject's sense of his own body is altered and he identifies the touches on the rubber hand as on his body.

that night (last night) i went with some other people to see guided by voices at the magic stick. alva (whom i kept wanting to call "uncle alva" for some reason) came too - someone brought him. he's a very nice guy. he had never heard of gbv but i think he liked them. i was expecting there to be more people just completely smashed, but it got rowdy enough i guess. they played for over two hours and played a lot of great songs, including my perhaps favorite, "get under it". when the band first came on stage they were introduced individually by "sick" names, since they were all sick. doug gillard was "diarrhea boy", for example, and bob pollard was "flu boy". one of them was "sinus boy" (kate's character that we record)! anyway it was a sweet show. oh yeah and tobin sprout showed up somehow, started singing at the end of a song. then they played "hot freaks" with him. also, the charlie mentioned in "skin parade" came on stage to sing the beginning of that song. weird.

so i went to l.a. (or rather a suburb thereof) for ted and lorri's wedding and it was a really really great time. they had the whole thing planned out to the t, which made it perfectly enjoyable. there were many lovely (and funny) things said about them at the rehearsal dinner. i was too shy to say what i had in mind - which is probably a good thing, since i told joy what it was later and it wasn't very interesting. but i'm very happy for my big brother. he's found the right girl.

Tomorrow I'm flying out to LA for Ted and Lorri's wedding. It's arrived so quickly! If I've ever been to California (which I'm pretty sure I haven't) it was only as a kid, so this will be a new experience for me. It'll be nice to get away from school too, and see family.
